Why does the end of a joint feel different?

A joint does not deliver identical smoke from the first light to the final puff. The burning material changes, and research shows that people change the way they inhale as the joint progresses.

Short answer: Experienced users took larger and longer puffs earlier, then progressively reduced puff volume and duration while puff velocity increased. Machine experiments also found that cannabinoid delivery per puff can shift from the beginning to the end.

Researchers measured every puff

A peer-reviewed inpatient study recorded cannabis-smoking topography in 20 heavy users. The device measured puff count, puff volume, puff duration, average velocity, and time to peak velocity while participants smoked cannabis cigarettes containing about 0.8 grams of roughly 3% THC flower.

The pattern was not random

Inhalation volume and puff duration were highest near the beginning and progressively decreased with later puffs. Puff velocity moved in the opposite direction and increased. A typical cannabis cigarette involved about 13 puffs, but behavior varied between participants.

BeginningLarger, longer puffs were more common when the joint was freshly lit and more material separated the ember from the filter.
MiddleHeat, smoke concentration, draw resistance, and user feedback continued to change.
EndPuffs tended to be smaller and shorter but faster. The remaining material was closer to the filter and prior smoke condensate.

Why might people change their draw?

The study could measure behavior but did not establish one single cause. Plausible influences include hotter smoke, stronger taste, increasing smoke concentration, a shorter joint, changing resistance, and the user regulating intake based on how they feel.

This is a useful reminder that exposure cannot be predicted from flower weight alone. Two people can share the same joint and inhale very different total volumes.

Machine experiments show changing delivery too

In a separate 2023 particle-size experiment, researchers captured smoke from the beginning, middle, and end of machine-smoked joints. Cannabinoid delivery per puff varied by grind size, flower type, and session stage. Several conditions produced greater delivery near the end, although the pattern was not identical in every sample.

What this means: “One puff” is not a standardized dose. Its volume, speed, placement in the session, flower, construction, and inhalation all matter.

Does the end always contain more THC?

No. The available research does not justify a universal claim that the final puff always delivers more THC or always feels stronger. The machine study used a small number of joints, and the human study measured puff behavior rather than blood THC after every individual puff.

Do not turn a pattern into a promise

A hotter, harsher, or more concentrated final puff may feel different without being predictably “stronger.” Individual tolerance and inhalation behavior can outweigh the construction effect.

Practical session lessons

  • Do not assume every puff is equivalent.
  • Pause before taking another puff, especially when potency is unfamiliar.
  • Avoid pulling harder to compensate for a blocked joint. Check the pack and airflow instead.
  • Relight gently rather than overheating one side.
  • Stop if the smoke becomes uncomfortable or harsh.
