A few minutes can feel strangely long after THC. Controlled human experiments explain the paradox, the limits of the internal-clock theory, why tolerance matters, and how attention and memory may reshape the experience.

Short answer: THC often makes short intervals feel longer than they really are. In laboratory tasks, intoxicated participants commonly overestimated elapsed seconds or stopped a timer too early when asked to produce a target interval. Researchers describe this as a faster subjective clock: more perceived moments seem to fit inside the same amount of real time, so the outside world appears to move slowly. The effect is real, but it is not perfectly consistent across every task, dose, person, or study.

Why does time seem to slow down when you are high?

The everyday description is that time slows down. The experimental description can sound like the opposite: a person’s internal clock may speed up. Both statements can describe the same experience.

Imagine that 30 real seconds pass. If your brain registers that interval as though 40 seconds passed, you have overestimated time. A song intro, microwave countdown, traffic light, or pause in conversation can therefore feel unusually long. In another common task, if a researcher asks you to signal when 30 seconds have passed, you may stop at 22 real seconds because your subjective clock has already reached 30. That is called underproduction.

External time feels slower

The room, music, conversation, or movie seems to unfold gradually because each real interval feels expanded.

Subjective time may run faster

Your brain may count more subjective moments during the same objective interval, leading you to judge it as longer.

Attention changes the feeling

When attention turns inward toward thoughts, sensations, or the fact that you are waiting, each moment may become more noticeable.

Memory changes the story

Working-memory disruption can make it harder to track what just happened, breaking a smooth sequence into disconnected moments.

How do researchers measure time perception?

Time perception is not one skill. Studies use several tasks, and the differences help explain why results sometimes disagree.

Counting silently can change the result, so stronger experiments either block counting or compare counting and no-counting conditions. Route also matters. Inhaled THC rises quickly, oral THC is delayed and prolonged, and intravenous THC used in some laboratory studies produces a rapid, standardized exposure that does not match ordinary cannabis use.

Important: a laboratory effect across a few seconds does not prove that every hour of a cannabis high will feel exactly the same. Short-interval timing, memory for a whole evening, and the emotional sense that a night “flew by” are related but different experiences.

What controlled human studies found

2013 randomized crossover analysis, 44 participants

THC caused time overestimation and underproduction

Researchers administered intravenous THC at doses from 0.015 to 0.05 mg per kilogram across double-blind, randomized, counterbalanced, placebo-controlled studies. Participants completed visual estimation and production tasks in the seconds range. THC produced overestimation and underproduction, especially in people who used cannabis infrequently. The authors interpreted the pattern as a faster internal clock. The effect was not neatly dose related. Read the study.

2006 smoked-cannabis experiment

Participants were more likely to call an interval “long”

Participants learned to distinguish a two-second blue square from a four-second square, then judged intermediate durations. Both a lower-potency and higher-potency marijuana condition shifted judgments toward “long.” The result is consistent with subjective time passing faster internally while the observed stimulus seems to last longer. 1984 two-experiment timing study

The change persisted even when participants counted

Participants produced durations after smoking cigarettes with or without THC. THC increased the subjective time rate under no-counting instructions. A second experiment found a similar effect when participants counted subjective seconds, suggesting that the distortion was not only a failure to remember the interval afterward. Read the study.

1976 double-blind crossover trial, 12 men

Marijuana and alcohol pushed timing in different directions

Participants received oral marijuana calibrated to 0.7 mg THC per kilogram, alcohol, or placebo on separate days. Marijuana caused significant underproduction of time intervals, and the change appeared alongside rising heart rate and subjective drug effects. Early alcohol intoxication produced the opposite pattern. The THC dose was large by modern retail-edible standards, and the sample was small and all male. Read the trial.

1973 controlled trial

THC disrupted temporal organization in both newer and experienced users

Researchers compared 3.3 mg THC, 6.6 mg THC, and placebo on three cognitive tasks in cannabis-naive and experienced participants. Both THC doses reduced task performance, replicating earlier findings described as temporal disintegration. The abstract reported no clear group difference between naive and experienced users. 2021 before-and-after study, 99 people

A newer natural-use study found a different direction

Fifty regular cannabis users completed a temporal production task before and after using their own cannabis, while 49 nonusers served as controls. After use, the cannabis group produced intervals that were too long, which the authors interpreted as a slower internal tempo. This conflicts with several controlled studies. Because participants were not randomly assigned a standardized placebo or verified product, the result is useful but cannot settle whether strain labels, THC dose, expectations, or another factor caused the difference. What the full evidence says

A 2012 critical review found that about 70% of cannabis time-estimation studies reported overestimation. Results for time production and reproduction were less consistent. The reviewers emphasized small samples, varied methods, different routes and doses, weak control of counting, and limited information about participants’ cannabis histories.

The stronger 2013 placebo-controlled work added meaningful evidence for overestimation and underproduction, but it did not make every inconsistency disappear. A fair conclusion is that acute THC can distort seconds-range timing, with the most common pattern making intervals feel longer. It is not accurate to claim that THC always slows time for everyone or that one exact dose produces one exact percentage of distortion.

What is happening in the brain?

There is no single confirmed “weed slows time” circuit. Timing depends on attention, working memory, arousal, decision-making, movement preparation, and brain networks that compare ongoing activity with stored intervals. Cannabinoid receptors are present in several regions involved in these functions, so THC can influence more than one part of the timing process at once.

Internal-clock models

One model proposes a pacemaker that emits mental pulses. If THC temporarily increases the pulse rate, more pulses accumulate during a real interval, making it seem longer.

Attention

Focusing on the passage of time tends to lengthen subjective duration. THC may pull attention toward bodily sensations, thoughts, sounds, and waiting itself.

Working memory

To compare now with a moment ago, the brain must hold and update information. THC can disrupt that process, making a continuous sequence feel fragmented.

Arousal and emotion

Anxiety, novelty, excitement, and strong sensory focus can each stretch subjective time. A calm familiar high may therefore feel different from a panicky unfamiliar one.

The internal-clock explanation fits several laboratory patterns, but it remains a model rather than a literal stopwatch found in one location. Attention and memory can produce similar task results, and the mechanisms probably overlap.

Do frequent cannabis users experience less time distortion?

Possibly. In the 2013 study, infrequent users showed overestimation at the medium and high THC doses and underproduction at all tested doses, while frequent users showed no significant THC-related timing differences. The authors viewed this as a blunted response consistent with tolerance. Frequent users did not show abnormal baseline timing when sober.

That finding does not mean a regular user has perfect judgment while high. Tolerance develops unevenly across subjective effects, heart rate, memory, attention, and motor performance. The 2021 natural-use study also detected altered timing in regular users, although in a different direction. Product potency, route, task design, recent abstinence, and expectations may explain part of the disagreement.

A person who feels less time distortion may still be impaired in other ways. Subjective familiarity is not a reliable test of driving ability, reaction time, or dose judgment.

Why edibles can make the effect especially confusing

An edible creates two timing problems at once. First, THC can distort the feeling of time. Second, oral THC has a delayed and variable onset. A person may think they have waited much longer than they actually have, take another dose, then experience both doses as absorption catches up.

Check an actual clock

Use your phone timer instead of guessing. Note the dose time so you do not accidentally redose.

Stop taking more THC

More THC is likely to prolong or intensify the experience. Do not add alcohol or another intoxicant.

Choose a simple anchor

Put on a familiar calm show, playlist, or guided breathing track with a known length. Predictability can reduce anxious monitoring.

Reduce stimulation

Move to a quiet, comfortable place. Bright crowds, fast conversation, and repeated clock checking can make panic worse.

Tell someone sober

A trusted person can confirm how much time has passed, prevent redosing, and help you avoid driving or wandering.

Use emergency signs, not the clock

Seek urgent help for severe chest pain, trouble breathing, seizure, collapse, dangerous behavior, or inability to wake.

Do not drive based on how long the trip feels. Distorted time, attention, memory, and reaction speed can interfere with judging gaps, traffic lights, speed, and how recently something happened. Arrange a sober ride.

Does weed actually slow down time?

Clock time does not change. THC can alter the brain’s estimate of short intervals, often making them feel longer. Researchers call this time overestimation or a faster subjective time rate.

Why can five minutes feel like an hour when high?

THC can change attention, working memory, arousal, and seconds-range timing. Anxiety and repeatedly checking whether the high is ending can magnify the feeling. Five minutes literally feeling like 60 is a subjective description, not a consistent laboratory ratio.

Can weed make time feel faster instead?

Yes. An absorbing activity, a social setting, memory gaps, tolerance, or a different task can make a longer period seem to disappear. Research results for production and reproduction tasks are mixed.

Do edibles distort time more than smoking?

Can cannabis permanently change time perception?

Current controlled evidence mainly concerns temporary effects during acute intoxication. The 2013 study found no baseline timing abnormality in frequent users when they were not acutely dosed. Persistent symptoms deserve evaluation by a clinician.
