The answer is not that edible THC is automatically more powerful. Swallowing it sends THC through a slower, less predictable route and creates more of an active metabolite called 11-hydroxy-THC.
Same THC, very different trip through the body
Route of use changes when THC reaches the bloodstream, how much reaches it, and which metabolites appear along the way. That is why 10 mg inhaled and 10 mg swallowed should not be treated as interchangeable experiences.
Lungs to bloodstream
Smoke or vapor carries THC across the lungs. Blood levels rise quickly, so people can usually feel and assess the effect sooner.
Gut to liver to bloodstream
An edible must dissolve, move through digestion, and undergo first-pass metabolism in the liver before much of the dose reaches circulation.
A controlled inhalation study found blood THC and 11-hydroxy-THC generally peaked within the first 10 to 30 minutes. In a controlled brownie study, oral THC produced delayed and highly variable blood concentrations and effects. Those are group findings, not a timer for every person.
What is 11-hydroxy-THC?
11-hydroxy-THC, shortened to 11-OH-THC, is an active metabolite made as the body processes THC. It is different from THC-COOH, the inactive metabolite commonly measured in drug testing.
It can contribute to intoxication
11-OH-THC is psychoactive. Research supports it as part of the oral cannabis experience, but no honest source can assign one universal percentage of the feeling to this metabolite.
The ratio changes by route
Human pharmacokinetic research reports higher 11-OH-THC to THC ratios after oral use than after smoking.
Dose and timing still matter
A large dose, delayed absorption, individual metabolism, and redosing before the first dose peaks can matter as much as the metabolite itself.
Important correction
“11-hydroxy-THC is exactly five times stronger” is not a reliable rule. Human effects are too variable for a fixed multiplier. The evidence supports meaningful pharmacological activity and more extensive formation after oral use, not a universal conversion formula.

The classic edible mistake
A person takes a serving, feels little after a short wait, takes more, and then both servings become active. The safer move is to follow the package directions, avoid stacking doses, and leave plenty of time before considering more. Do not drive or operate machinery.

- Find the milligrams of THC per serving, not only the total in the package.
- Check how many pieces or milliliters make one serving.
- Confirm whether the product contains delta-9 THC, THCA, or a mixture of cannabinoids.
- Look for a batch-specific certificate of analysis when available.
- Keep the product secured away from children and pets. Edibles can resemble ordinary food.
