Smelling peppercorns or chewing black pepper is one of the internet’s favorite fixes for being too high. The spice contains an interesting terpene, but a plausible molecule is not the same as a proven antidote.

Black pepper contains aromatic terpenes, and beta-caryophyllene can be a major component of its essential oil.

Why the black pepper trick sounds scientific
Black pepper and cannabis share beta-caryophyllene, a woody and spicy terpene. A landmark 2008 study reported that beta-caryophyllene acts as a functional agonist at the CB2 receptor. Researchers sometimes call it a dietary cannabinoid for that reason.
The connection is real, but the conclusion often skips several steps. CB2 signaling is not the main switch responsible for feeling high. THC’s intoxicating effects are primarily associated with CB1 receptors in the central nervous system. Showing that purified beta-caryophyllene affects CB2 does not establish that an ordinary peppercorn dose counteracts THC at CB1.

How much beta-caryophyllene is in pepper?
It varies. One gas chromatography study of black pepper essential oil reported beta-caryophyllene as 29.9% of that extracted oil. Other analyses have found different proportions depending on origin, cultivar, storage, grinding, and extraction method.
That percentage describes a concentrated volatile oil, not the amount delivered to the bloodstream by smelling a jar or chewing a few peppercorns. The dried spice is not pure essential oil, and exposure through the nose or digestive tract is not equivalent to a controlled dose of a purified compound.

Why pepper might still feel helpful
A grounding ritual
Focusing on a familiar smell, slow breathing, and a simple task can redirect attention away from spiraling thoughts.
Expectation
Believing that relief is coming can change how distress is perceived. That does not prove the terpene caused the change.
Time passing
Inhaled THC often peaks and begins easing while a person is searching for a remedy and waiting for it to work.
Change of setting
Sitting down, talking to a calm person, getting water, and leaving a stimulating environment may provide the real relief.

How many peppercorns should you chew when too high?
There is no evidence-based dose because the remedy has not been validated in a human cannabis trial. Chewing dry peppercorns may irritate the mouth or cause coughing and choking.
Does smelling black pepper work instantly?
No study shows an instant pharmacological reversal. A familiar aroma and focused breathing may feel grounding, but THC remains in the body.
Does beta-caryophyllene block THC?
