What Are Trichomes? Cannabis Resin Glands Explained

Plenny Learn · Plant anatomy

The tiny structures behind the frost.

Trichomes are small outgrowths on a plant’s surface. In cannabis, glandular trichomes make and store cannabinoids and terpenes. Many have rounded heads that give flowers a sparkling or frosty appearance under magnification. The gland is a plant structure; the resin inside it is a mixture of compounds.

What do cannabis trichomes look like?

Researchers describe several glandular forms, including bulbous, sessile and stalked trichomes. Their names describe aspects of their shape and attachment.

Bulbous

A small, rounded glandular form.

Sessile

A gland whose head sits close to the plant surface, without a prominent stalk.

Stalked

A glandular head raised above the surface on a stalk.

A microscopy and chemical-profiling study found differences between stalked and sessile glands in secretory cell numbers and chemical profiles. It also found evidence that some apparently sessile glands develop into stalked glands. These categories are more informative than simply calling every visible speck a crystal.

What is inside a glandular trichome?

A glandular head contains secretory disk cells and a storage cavity outside those cells. The cells produce specialized metabolites, while the cavity provides space for accumulated material. The rounded head is not a solid crystal of THC.

A 2021 cell-wall study examined how that cavity forms. Researchers found organized changes in wall components as the gland developed, helping explain how its structure accommodates stored metabolites.

Secretory disk cells

These are the living cells associated with production of the gland’s specialized compounds. The term describes tissue, not the resin itself.

Storage cavity

This is the extracellular space where metabolites accumulate. “Extracellular” means outside the cells, even though the space is within the glandular head.

Cell walls and outer covering

The surrounding structures help define the gland and its storage space. The 2021 study showed that specific wall regions change during development.

How do scientists study trichomes?

Different instruments answer different questions. A microscope reveals structures; chemical analysis identifies and measures compounds. Researchers combine those approaches because a picture alone cannot provide all the chemical information.

In work described by University of British Columbia researchers in 2022, electron microscopy revealed how metabolically active trichome cells are organized and connected. The findings helped explain the movement of materials within this specialized tissue.

That is a study of plant cell biology. It does not establish a medical benefit or predict how a person will respond to a flower.

Do more visible trichomes prove higher THC?

Visible glands are relevant to a flower’s anatomy, but counting sparkles in a photograph is not a measurement of cannabinoid concentration. Lighting, focus and magnification also affect what a photograph shows.

Keep the questions separate: “What structures can I see?” and “What did a laboratory measure?” A close-up can help with the first question. It cannot supply an exact THC or THCA percentage.

The same limitation applies to safety claims. A frosty appearance alone cannot rule out contamination. A photo and a lab report provide different kinds of information, and neither should be presented as answering questions it was not designed to answer.

Common questions about trichomes

Are trichomes the same thing as resin?

No. A glandular trichome is the plant structure. Resin refers to the material associated with its secretions.

Are trichomes made entirely of THC?

No. They include plant cells and structural components. Their secretions contain a mixture of compounds rather than pure THC.

Can a trichome photo tell me the exact potency?

No. A photograph does not provide a validated cannabinoid concentration. An exact percentage requires an appropriate analytical measurement.
