Short answer: In a normally ventilated space, secondhand cannabis smoke is unlikely to cause a noticeable high. Under extreme conditions, such as spending an hour in a small unventilated room with several people smoking, nonsmokers have absorbed measurable THC and reported mild drug effects. Ventilation greatly reduced exposure in controlled research.
The most useful experiment tested ventilation directly
Johns Hopkins researchers placed six cannabis users and six nonsmokers in a controlled chamber for one hour. The cannabis contained 11.3% THC. The team compared an unventilated session with a ventilated session providing 11 air exchanges per hour.
This was intentionally heavy exposure, not a person briefly smelling cannabis outdoors. The practical lesson is that concentration, duration, and airflow control the dose.

Could secondhand smoke make you fail a drug test?
It is unlikely after ordinary incidental exposure, but not impossible after unusually intense exposure. In the Johns Hopkins urine study, no nonsmoker samples screened positive at 75 or 100 ng/mL. One positive occurred at the commonly used 50 ng/mL screening cutoff, while several appeared at the more sensitive 20 ng/mL cutoff. Ventilation sharply reduced the results.
A real-world coffee-shop study found that all eight nonsmoking volunteers absorbed trace THC during three hours of exposure, yet none of their urine samples crossed the study’s 25 ng/mL screening cutoff. These results support a careful answer: trace absorption can happen without producing a standard positive test.
You do not need to feel high for smoke exposure to matter
Secondhand cannabis smoke contains fine particles and combustion products. A rat study found that one minute of marijuana secondhand smoke impaired a measure of blood-vessel function for at least 90 minutes. Because that experiment used animals, it cannot tell us the exact effect size in people, but it challenges the idea that cannabis smoke is harmless whenever a person does not feel intoxicated.
Smoke can also irritate the eyes, throat, and lungs. People with asthma or heart and lung conditions, pregnant people, children, and pets should not be exposed to indoor cannabis smoke.
How to reduce secondhand cannabis smoke
- Smoke outdoors and away from doors, windows, children, pets, and other people.
- Do not smoke in a car, even with a window open.
- Do not rely on candles, air fresheners, or odor sprays. They do not remove the exposure.
- Ventilation and filtration can reduce indoor concentration, but they do not make smoking around others risk free.
- Respect smoke-free housing, workplace, and public-space rules.

Is a contact high real?

Can you get high sitting next to someone smoking?
