What this quiz teaches
A certificate of analysis, or COA, records laboratory results. Interpreting one means asking what was tested, which material was sampled, and what the numbers and qualifiers mean. A result should support a specific conclusion, not a broader promise.
This activity is a companion to How to Read a Cannabis COA. All sample names and numbers below are fictional. Nothing in the exercise certifies a real product, estimates a personal dose, or determines legal status.

The answer guide

1. Match the batch
A strain name is not a batch identifier. Ask for the matching report or a documented explanation. California’s sampling guidance specifically checks that the COA corresponds to the correct batch.
2. Read the qualifier
A non-detect is not proof of absolute zero. Read the laboratory’s own legend and limit. EPA data guidance distinguishes non-detect results from a measured concentration of zero.
3. Compare the units
One gram is 1,000 milligrams. 2 mg in 1,000 mg is 0.002, or 0.2%. Units and reporting basis must match before comparing values. This is a unit conversion, not dosing guidance.
4. Spot a missing panel
Request the complete report. A cannabinoid result does not supply a missing contaminant result. DCC lists these as different testing categories; an omitted page cannot tell you its outcome.
5. Respect the scope
A report documents specified tests on identified material. It cannot establish results for untested hazards or guarantee every future condition. Keep conclusions within the information actually reported.
Three useful reading habits
Find the scope
Check the sample and batch identifiers, report date, page count, and the panels actually included. A cropped screenshot can omit relevant information.
Read the legend
ND, detection limits, and quantitation limits need the laboratory’s definitions. Do not silently turn a qualified result into an exact number.
Keep your conclusion narrow. If a result or page is missing, describe it as missing. Ask the issuing laboratory for clarification of its report rather than filling the gap with an assumption.
