Does Weed Affect Your Vision?
Human studies suggest cannabis can temporarily affect contrast, focusing, depth perception, eye movements, and night vision, even when a person does not notice every change.
Five ways cannabis may change what you see
Objects may blend into the background
Contrast sensitivity helps you see a gray car at dusk, a curb in shadow, or faint text. It can decline even when a standard eye-chart result looks acceptable.
Near and far adjustment can slow
Accommodation is the eye’s focusing response. Small studies have found altered focusing dynamics after cannabis use, which may contribute to temporary blur during reading or screen use.
Distance judgments can become less precise
Stereoacuity combines input from both eyes to estimate depth. Controlled testing has recorded worse near and far stereoacuity after smoking cannabis.
Halos may be more distracting
Light scattered inside the eye can reduce visual quality. Headlights, rain, and darkness make small visual deficits more consequential.
Tracking may become less accurate
Vision also depends on rapid eye movements and attention. Reviews find THC can increase saccadic inaccuracy, although results differ across tests.
A temporary drop is not glaucoma treatment
THC can briefly lower intraocular pressure, but the short duration and psychoactive effects make cannabis unsuitable as routine glaucoma therapy.
What six human studies and reviews found
Every tested visual measure worsened
After smoking cannabis, participants had worse visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, depth perception, focusing response, straylight, halos, and pupil measures. About two thirds felt their vision had worsened. Read the study.
Visual changes appeared alongside worse lane control
Visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and near and far stereoacuity declined after cannabis use. Participants also had more difficulty keeping the simulated vehicle in its lane. Read the study.
The eye’s focusing response changed
Researchers measured accommodation objectively before and after cannabis use. Mean focusing and unfocusing velocity changed, with effects differing by target distance and personal factors. Read the study.
Users showed lower low-light contrast and motion performance
Compared with non-users, cannabis users had reduced spatial contrast sensitivity in dim light and needed more coherent motion to detect movement. Frequency of use correlated with several deficits, but the design cannot prove cannabis caused them. Read the study.
THC most consistently affected saccadic accuracy
A review of ocular measures relevant to traffic safety found inhaled THC increased inattention measured through inaccurate rapid eye movements, while other eye-movement results were inconsistent. Read the review.
Eye pressure can fall, but only briefly
Cannabinoids can lower intraocular pressure, yet the effect is short-lived and available evidence is inadequate for routine glaucoma treatment. Prescribed drops provide steadier control without intoxication. Read the review.
Why nighttime can expose the problem
Night driving demands contrast sensitivity, motion detection, depth judgment, divided attention, and quick adjustment to glare. Cannabis may affect several of these at once. A person may still read a bright sign while having more difficulty seeing a pedestrian in dark clothing or recovering from headlights.
Blur is not always from THC
Dry eye, contact lenses, smoke irritation, migraine, low blood sugar, medication effects, and an incorrect prescription can also cause blur. Sudden vision loss, a curtain or shadow, flashing lights with many new floaters, severe eye pain, a chemical injury, or new neurological symptoms need urgent medical evaluation.

Frequently asked questions
Can weed make your vision blurry?
Yes. Studies have measured changes in visual acuity and focusing after cannabis use. Dryness, smoke, fatigue, or another eye problem can also contribute.
Does weed affect night vision?
It may reduce contrast sensitivity and increase halos or glare problems. Dim conditions make subtle visual changes more important.
How long do cannabis vision effects last?
There is no universal timer. Dose, route, tolerance, and product potency matter. Edibles can begin later and last longer than inhaled cannabis.
Can you drive if your vision feels normal after weed?
No visual self-check proves driving fitness. THC can affect attention, reaction time, coordination, and judgment even when a person thinks their eyesight is fine.
Does weed permanently damage eyesight?
Current human studies mainly document temporary changes. Evidence is not strong enough to say ordinary use permanently damages vision, but persistent symptoms need an eye examination.
Does cannabis cure glaucoma?
No. THC may lower eye pressure for a few hours, but it does not provide stable around-the-clock control and is not recommended as routine glaucoma treatment.
Can CBD affect eye pressure?
A small controlled study found 40 mg of sublingual CBD temporarily raised eye pressure, while 20 mg did not lower it. People with glaucoma should discuss cannabinoid products with their eye doctor.
When is blurry vision an emergency?
Seek urgent care for sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, a curtain over vision, flashes with many new floaters, eye injury, weakness, facial droop, confusion, or trouble speaking.
