Feeling chilly, getting goosebumps, or briefly shivering after cannabis can happen. THC may influence temperature regulation, circulation, anxiety, and awareness of body sensations, but feeling cold does not automatically mean your core temperature is dangerously low.
First, separate feeling cold from true hypothermia
Cold sensation, goosebumps, and shivering are related, but they are not the same measurement. A person can feel unusually cold while maintaining a normal core temperature. Skin temperature can change faster than core temperature, and altered attention can make a mild sensation feel surprisingly intense.

What the cannabinoid research actually shows
CB1 receptors are found in brain areas that help coordinate temperature regulation. Activating these receptors can change heat production and temperature-related signaling. In animal experiments, THC and several other cannabinoid agonists reliably reduce body temperature at sufficiently high doses. Blocking CB1 signaling can prevent that response.
The important limitation is that animal doses and routes do not neatly match the way people smoke, vape, or eat cannabis. A major review concluded that the relevance of the strong animal cooling response to ordinary human cannabis use remains unclear. The same review notes reports of cannabis users feeling cold and briefly shivering.
Strong preclinical evidence
THC can produce a dose-dependent drop in body temperature in multiple animal species through CB1-related mechanisms.
Limited human evidence
Older clinical work reported decreased skin temperature, while reviews emphasize that controlled human thermoregulation data remain sparse.
Tolerance may matter
Repeated exposure can reduce several acute THC effects. That does not make a high dose predictable or risk-free.
Feeling is not measurement
A cold sensation or shiver is real, but it does not by itself prove a dangerous change in core temperature.
Five reasons cannabis can make you feel cold
1. Temperature-control signaling
THC can affect CB1 pathways involved in the hypothalamus and other thermoregulatory circuits. This is the clearest biological explanation, although the human dose-response relationship is not well mapped.
2. Changes in circulation
Cannabinoids can affect blood pressure and vascular resistance. A randomized study found postural dizziness after both smoked marijuana and THC, with marked blood pressure and cerebral blood-flow changes in the most symptomatic participants.
3. Anxiety or a strong dose
Panic can cause trembling, muscle tension, sweating, and heightened monitoring of the body. Those sensations can feel like unexplained chills even when the room and core temperature are normal.
4. Environment and behavior
Sitting still, wearing damp clothes, being outdoors, using a fan, or drinking something cold can become much more noticeable during intoxication.
5. Another condition entirely
Fever, infection, low blood sugar, medication effects, dehydration, or exposure to cold can occur at the same time as cannabis use. Do not assume every symptom is caused by THC.
What to do if you feel cold or start shivering
When chills are a warning sign
Get urgent help for severe or unusual symptoms
Call 911 for trouble breathing, chest pain, a seizure, collapse, blue or gray lips, severe confusion, inability to wake, or another immediate emergency. Call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 in the United States for guidance about a suspected cannabis poisoning.
Repeated vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or compulsive hot bathing in a frequent cannabis user can point toward cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome and deserves medical evaluation.

Why one person gets chills and another does not
More THC generally produces stronger and less predictable effects.

Alcohol, nicotine, medications, and unknown ingredients can change the response.

Does weed actually lower body temperature?
