A faint ember sound can be ordinary combustion. Sharp pops, repeated bright sparks, sizzling, or unusual residue deserve a closer look before you keep using the flower.
Short answer: Crackling or popping can come from trapped moisture turning to steam, a hidden seed or hard plant fragment, uneven combustion, or foreign particles. A sound alone cannot identify fertilizer, pesticides, heavy metals, or another contaminant. Stop if sparks are repeated or bright, the flower smells chemical or musty, residue looks unusual, or the product came from an unknown source.
First identify what you actually noticed
People often use “crackle,” “pop,” “spark,” and “sizzle” for different events. Separating them helps narrow the possibilities without pretending a sound is a laboratory test.
Moisture is one plausible cause
Water absorbs heat and changes the way plant material burns. When a small pocket of moisture heats rapidly, it can form steam and create a hiss, sizzle, or tiny pop. Dense flower may feel dry on the surface while retaining more moisture inside.
Cannabis laboratories distinguish moisture content from water activity. Water activity describes how available water is for chemical reactions and microbial growth. ASTM created a specific standard practice for measuring water activity in cannabis flower because it matters for storage quality and safety. Neither measurement can be determined precisely by squeezing a bud or listening to it burn.
Seeds and hard plant fragments can pop
A mature or partially developed seed has a hard outer structure surrounding internal material. Rapid heating can create pressure and make it split or pop. Small seed fragments can be difficult to see after grinding.
A stem can also heat and burn differently from leafy flower, although it may cause an uneven ember rather than a dramatic spark. Inspect ground flower under bright light before use and remove obvious seeds, shells, and large stems.

What research can and cannot tell us
There is very little controlled research that starts with a consumer’s observation of sparkling flower and determines the cause. The available science is better at measuring water activity, postharvest processing, contaminants, and what transfers into smoke.
Does sparking mean leftover fertilizer?
That claim is repeated online far more confidently than the evidence allows. Cannabis naturally contains minerals because plants require mineral nutrients to grow. A spark does not prove that fertilizer is sitting on or inside the flower, and it does not reveal whether the crop was flushed before harvest.
A recent controlled flushing study found only minor effects on mineral accumulation and most measured plant chemistry across five cultivars. The study did not validate sparking as a flushing test.
Could a lighter cause the sparks?
Yes. A flint lighter can shed tiny hot particles near the flame, and an angled flame can make them more visible. The bowl, screen, rolling paper, ash, and nearby debris can also contribute.
If you are investigating a suspicious event, do not keep inhaling to reproduce it. Extinguish the material, let everything cool, and inspect the flower and equipment under good light.
Could it be mold or insects?
Mold does not have a unique spark sound. Neither do mites, pesticides, or most contaminants. Mold is better screened through visual condition, odor, storage history, and appropriate laboratory testing. Look for fuzzy growth, gray or white patches that do not resemble trichomes, webbing, musty odor, or unusually damp material.
Do not scrape off a suspicious section and use the rest. Mold and contamination can extend beyond what is visible.

How to inspect flower before use
- Use bright neutral light and examine the outside of the buds.
- Break one bud open and inspect the center for moisture, discoloration, seeds, fuzz, or debris.
- Check the grinder and surface for sand-like, glass-like, metallic, or oily particles.
- Compare the product and lot with its COA.
- If anything looks or smells wrong, seal it and contact the retailer instead of testing it by inhalation.

Is a little crackling normal?
