What is dry sift?

Dry sift is a cannabis concentrate made by mechanically separating resin glands from dried flower with fine mesh screens. No water or chemical extraction solvent is used.

Short answer: Dried cannabis is moved across one or more screens. Small resin-rich trichomes pass through while larger pieces of plant material stay behind. The loose result may be called dry sift or kief, and selected fractions can be pressed into hash or used as material for rosin.

How dry sift is made

Dry

The starting flower is dried. Temperature and humidity affect how easily trichomes detach and how much plant material breaks apart.

Agitate

The material is moved across a mesh surface so brittle glandular trichomes separate from the flower.

Screen

One or more screen sizes sort particles by their ability to pass through the mesh openings.

Collect

Processors gather separate fractions, inspect them and may refine, press or package the sift.

Mechanical separation is the defining feature

Dry sift does not use ice water like bubble hash and does not use hydrocarbon solvents like BHO. The screens separate particles by size, but they do not verify purity, potency or safety.

What a screen stack actually does

Coarser screen

Holds back larger flower pieces while allowing smaller particles and detached resin glands to move through.

Middle fraction

Collects a range that may contain many trichome heads along with smaller plant particles.

Finer fraction

Catches smaller material. Finer does not automatically mean better because trichome size varies by plant and fraction.

Screen openings are commonly described in microns or mesh counts. Those systems describe size differently and should not be treated as potency grades.

A broad name for loose trichome-rich material. It may collect naturally in a grinder or be produced by screening flower.

Dry sift

Usually describes intentionally screened material, often separated into fractions with one or more mesh sizes.

Pressed hash

Loose sift or kief can be compressed into a cohesive piece. Pressing changes the form, not the original separation method.

The label matters more than color

Blond, tan, brown and green material can all appear in the marketplace. Color alone cannot establish the process, cannabinoid content, cleanliness or batch identity.

What affects dry sift quality?

Trichome maturity, density, plant condition and handling all influence what can be separated.

Temperature and movement

Colder material can make trichomes more brittle. Aggressive agitation may also break more plant material into the sift.

Screening and storage

Screen sequence, cleanliness, moisture, heat, light and oxygen can affect the finished fraction and its condition.

Dry sift is a concentrate

Its cannabinoid concentration can be higher than flower and varies by batch. THC can impair memory, attention, decision-making and driving. Keep cannabis away from children and pets, avoid mixing it with alcohol, and use the matching lab report instead of assuming strength from appearance.

Frequently asked questions

Is dry sift the same as kief?

The terms often overlap. Kief broadly describes loose trichome-rich material, while dry sift usually implies an intentional screening process with one or more mesh sizes.

Is dry sift solventless?

Yes. It is mechanically separated without water or chemical extraction solvents.

Is dry sift the same as bubble hash?

No. Dry sift uses dry screens. Bubble hash uses ice water, agitation and filter bags before the collected material is dried.

Can dry sift be pressed into hash?

Does a finer screen mean stronger sift?
