What human studies found
Initial levels predicted very different urine windows
Participants stayed on a secure research unit for up to 30 days. Depending on their starting creatinine-normalized THC-COOH level, the mean last positive result at a 50 ng/mL screen occurred at 4.3, 9.7, or 15.4 days. Some negative samples appeared before later positives.
Rare urine outliers lasted far beyond a month
An older study using a sensitive 20 ng/mL threshold documented positive tests for as many as 46 consecutive days. The group mean was 27 days, and intermittent negative results sometimes occurred before another positive. This is evidence of variability, not a typical promise for every daily user.
Blood THC sometimes remained measurable for days
Sixteen participants had measurable blood THC at least once during abstinence, and six still had detectable THC after six full days. This shows why blood detection does not map perfectly to recent use or current impairment in chronic users.
Saliva detected recent smoking earlier than urine
After smoked cannabis, oral-fluid samples were consecutively positive for an average of about 13 to 15 hours, while urine took an average of four to six hours to first become positive. Actual last-positive times varied across participants.
Hair testing had limitations for light use
THC was detected in 77% of self-reported heavy users but only 39% of light users, with no positives among non-users. Hair offers a long lookback, but it is not a perfect calendar or a guaranteed detector of one-time use.
What changes how long weed stays detectable?
Frequency of use
This is usually the biggest driver. Repeated use allows THC and its metabolites to accumulate before earlier doses fully clear.
Total THC dose
A high-potency product, large edible, or repeated session can create more metabolite for the body to process.
Test and cutoff
Urine, blood, saliva, and hair measure different compounds with different thresholds and purposes.
Time and metabolism
Liver enzymes, age, health, and individual physiology contribute to large person-to-person differences.
Body composition
THC is fat soluble, but body weight or body fat alone cannot accurately predict a test date.
Route of use
Smoking, vaping, and eating THC produce different concentration curves, though frequency and dose still dominate.
Why urine tests can stay positive after the high ends
The body rapidly redistributes and metabolizes delta-9 THC. One major breakdown product is 11-nor-9-carboxy-THC, often written THC-COOH. It is inactive, but it can remain in the body and be excreted in urine long after a person feels sober.
A common workplace process screens urine at one threshold and confirms a non-negative sample with a more specific laboratory method at another threshold. Because urine concentration changes with hydration, laboratories may also evaluate creatinine or specimen validity.
Can you get weed out of your system faster?
No drink, supplement, sauna, workout, or home recipe has been proven to make every person test negative on demand. Time and stopping further THC exposure are the dependable factors.
Drinking excessive water
This may dilute urine temporarily, but laboratories can flag an unusually dilute specimen. Too much water can also be dangerous.
Hard exercise
Exercise supports general health, but it is not a reliable last-minute detox strategy and cannot guarantee a negative result.
Detox products
Product claims rarely account for the laboratory cutoff, use history, or specimen-validity checks. A guarantee should be treated skeptically.
Medical and testing context matters
If a clinician ordered the test, discuss medications, supplements, cannabinoid products, and the reason for testing honestly. Do not stop prescribed treatment without medical advice. For workplace, court, athletic, or licensing testing, follow the official program rules because thresholds and confirmation procedures vary.

How long does weed stay in urine after one use?
A common planning estimate is about one to three days, but a larger dose, a more sensitive cutoff, or prior use can extend the window. Only an actual test can determine whether a specimen is positive.
How long does weed stay in your system if you smoke every day?
Daily use can remain detectable in urine for several weeks. Monitored studies have documented some chronic users testing positive beyond 30 days, especially at sensitive thresholds.
How long do edibles stay in your system?
The obvious effects often last longer than inhaled cannabis, but drug-test detection depends mainly on the THC dose, use frequency, specimen type, and cutoff. Edibles can produce the same urine metabolite targeted after smoking.
Can weed show up in routine blood work?
Routine blood panels do not normally include a cannabis test. THC or its metabolites appear only when a specific toxicology test is ordered.
Does CBD show up on a drug test?
