How Much THC Is in a Dab?

A dab can contain far more THC than its tiny size suggests. Here is the simple potency formula, real examples for 70% to 90% concentrates, and what laboratory and human studies say about the amount that actually reaches you.

There is no standard amount of THC in one dab because a dab is not a regulated unit. Its THC content depends on two numbers: the weight of the concentrate and the product’s total THC percentage. A small 0.05 gram dab of a 70% concentrate contains about 35 milligrams of theoretical THC. A 0.1 gram dab of a 90% concentrate contains about 90 milligrams.

This distinction matters. Some THC stays on the tool or chamber. Some is degraded by heat, lost to the air, exhaled, or never transferred into the vapor stream. Device temperature, technique, concentrate texture, inhalation pattern, tolerance, and product chemistry all change the experience.

The simple THC calculation

Convert the percentage to a decimal. For example, 70% becomes 0.70 and 82% becomes 0.82.

Why THC in the jar is not THC in your bloodstream

A 2015 laboratory investigation analyzed 57 concentrates and ran controlled dabbing experiments. The researchers reported that up to 40% of the theoretically available THC could be captured in the vapor stream. That does not establish a universal absorption rate. It does show why multiplying weight by potency gives a useful ceiling, not an exact personal dose.

It is also one reason visual labels such as “rice-sized” or “pea-sized” are poor units. Concentrates have different densities and shapes. A scale that reads to 0.01 gram is much more informative than appearance alone, although even weight cannot predict individual effects.

How strong are concentrates in the real market?

Concentrates commonly test much higher than flower. A study covering more than 34,000 regulated products in Michigan found average total THC levels of about 18% to 23% in flower, while concentrates averaged as high as 82%. A newer independent Colorado audit found a mean labeled potency of 73.0% and a mean measured potency of 70.7% across 99 concentrates.

That broad range means the same 0.05 gram portion could contain roughly 20 milligrams at 40% THC, 35 milligrams at 70%, or 45 milligrams at 90%. The dab’s physical size did not change. The chemical amount did.

What “total THC” means on a COA

Many laboratory reports calculate total THC as delta-9 THC plus 0.877 times THCA. The 0.877 factor accounts for the mass lost when THCA sheds carbon dioxide during heating. If a certificate already lists Total THC, use that figure for the quick calculation instead of adding THCA and delta-9 THC again.

Does a 90% dab feel exactly 29% stronger than a 70% dab?

No. The material contains about 29% more THC by weight, but the felt effect does not have to rise by the same percentage. Experienced consumers may change portion size or inhalation behavior. Devices differ in delivery. Tolerance and recent use change response. The relation between blood THC, subjective intoxication, and task impairment is also imperfect.

The 2020 flower-and-concentrate study illustrates this clearly. Participants using 70% or 90% concentrates had high THC exposure, but the two concentrate potency groups were not reliably different across many short-term outcomes. That does not make 90% harmless or equivalent. It means product percentage alone cannot predict a person’s experience with mathematical precision.

A controlled Johns Hopkins crossover trial adds useful dose context even though it used smoked and vaporized flower rather than dabs. Among 17 adults who had not recently used cannabis, 10 milligrams of THC caused noticeable effects and some cognitive impairment, while 25 milligrams produced stronger effects, more adverse reactions, and pronounced impairment. Vaporization also produced higher blood THC and stronger effects than smoking at the same nominal dose.

How to read a concentrate label

Find total THCUse the product’s total THC number when it is provided. Do not confuse it with total cannabinoids.

A certificate of analysis is a snapshot of a tested sample, not a guarantee that every microscopic portion is identical. Concentrates tend to be more homogeneous than flower, which may help explain why concentrate labels performed better in the 2025 audit. Still, the study found measured THC was slightly lower than labeled THC on average.

A practical way to think about dab size

First calculate the theoretical THC. Then treat that number as a comparison tool, not a promise of absorbed dose. If two portions weigh the same, the higher-percentage product contains more THC. If two products have the same percentage, the heavier portion contains more THC. Both weight and potency must be considered together.

For people who choose to use concentrates, a smaller measured portion makes the potential dose easier to understand than a large visual estimate.
