Does weed dilate your pupils?
Large pupils are widely treated as a generic sign that someone used a drug. Cannabis does not follow that simple rule.
Short answer: Weed does not reliably dilate the pupils. A 2025 placebo-controlled human trial found that intravenous THC decreased pupil size and weakened the pupil’s response to light. Other studies have reported smaller pupils, little change, or inconsistent size effects. Changes in pupil movement may be more reliable than diameter alone.
Pupil size is only one part of the story
Researchers separate the static size of a pupil from how it moves when light changes.
Pupil diameter
The width of the dark opening in the center of the eye. Light level, age, stress, medications, and many other factors change it.
Light reflex
The pupil normally constricts when exposed to light. Researchers measure its speed, delay, amplitude, and recovery.
Pupil variability
The pupil continuously makes small adjustments. Recent studies found cannabis can reduce the normal moment-to-moment variability.
What the 2025 placebo-controlled trial found
Fifteen healthy volunteers received intravenous THC and four received placebo. They were cannabis-naive or had abstained for at least one month.
Researchers used infrared pupillography before dosing and repeatedly afterward.
The median relative amplitude declined by 20 minutes after THC, while the placebo group stayed approximately stable.
THC reduced constriction amplitude and constriction time, and pupil diameter decreased before returning toward baseline. The authors concluded that THC produced miosis, meaning smaller pupils, rather than mydriasis, meaning dilated pupils.
The study was exploratory and small, especially its four-person placebo group. THC was given intravenously, which is different from smoking, vaping, or eating a product. Its result should be interpreted with those limits in mind.
The myth versus the evidence
Common assumption
“If someone used weed, their pupils will be large.”
Better conclusion
THC can alter pupil dynamics, but static pupil diameter is inconsistent and can even decrease. A glance at someone’s eyes cannot identify cannabis use or prove impairment.
A review cited by the 2025 researchers found earlier studies pointing in different directions: three reported larger pupils, five reported smaller pupils, and one found no significant change. Differences in route, dose, tolerance, lighting, equipment, and timing likely contribute to the mixed results.

Why THC may increase light sensitivity without bigger pupils
The pupil normally constricts to reduce the amount of light entering the eye. The 2025 study found a slower and less pronounced response to a light stimulus. Even though baseline pupil diameter decreased, the weakened reflex could make adapting to sudden light changes less efficient.
Visual experience also depends on contrast sensitivity, focus, depth perception, tear film, attention, and brain processing. Pupil size alone cannot predict whether headlights will feel bright or whether someone can drive safely.
Red eyes and pupil size are different
Redness comes mainly from changes at the surface of the eye and visible blood vessels. The pupil is the opening controlled by muscles in the iris. A person can have red eyes without obviously large or small pupils, and many causes unrelated to cannabis can produce eye redness.

Do not use pupils as a sobriety test
Room lighting, phone screens, emotions, fatigue, eye disease, neurological conditions, and many medications affect pupils. Unequal pupils, a new nonreactive pupil, sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, weakness, confusion, or a severe headache can signal a medical emergency. Seek urgent care rather than assuming cannabis is the cause.
Normal-looking pupils also do not prove that driving ability is normal. Do not drive or operate machinery while impaired.
Frequently asked questions
Does THC make pupils bigger or smaller?
Both have appeared in past studies, but several recent controlled and observational studies found smaller pupils or reduced pupil dynamics. Static size is not consistent enough to serve as a simple THC test.
Why do my eyes feel sensitive to light when high?
THC may weaken or slow parts of the pupillary light reflex. Contrast sensitivity, focus, tear film, and sensory processing can also influence light sensitivity.
Can police tell you are high from your pupils?
Eye observations may be one part of an evaluation, but pupil size alone cannot prove recent cannabis use or impairment. Objective tests also have limitations and must be interpreted in context.
Are pinpoint pupils caused by weed?
Very small pinpoint pupils are classically associated with opioids and certain neurological emergencies, not a reliable cannabis pattern. If someone is extremely drowsy, breathing slowly, or cannot be awakened, call emergency services and administer naloxone if opioid exposure is possible and it is available.
How long do cannabis-related pupil changes last?
The answer depends on route, dose, tolerance, lighting, and the measurement used. The 2025 intravenous study followed participants for five hours and found measures changed over time rather than remaining fixed.
